Description of the Project

IPv4, the actual Internet protocol, will meet its own limitations soon. Indeed, specialists predict an address space crunch with the growing popularity of the Internet around the world. One of the most promising protocols that could replace IPv4 is the IPv6 protocol. Not only IPv6 will allow a much bigger number of address, but it will also give some better security, mobility and quality of service (QoS) to the Internet. Moreover, this protocol will allow multicasting, autoconfiguration, multihoming and many other specifications not found on IPv4.

Very promising, IPv6 is still at its first step and to help its growth, Canarie announced in November 1999 that Viagénie had received the first ANAST program fund for its project on IPv6. This will permit Viagénie of working on the development of new IPv6 applications and services and thus, IPv6 could be more widely used.

To develop these services and applications, Viagénie has subdivided its projects on different milestones.

  • Milestone 1: Generic project
  • Milestone 2: 6Tap, phase 1
  • Milestone 3: 6Tap, phase 2
  • Milestone 4: Network services in IPv6
  • Milestone 5: Network time server IPv6
  • Milestone 6: IPv6 implementation package
  • Milestone 7: IPv6 MP3 server
