Québec, QC, November 27, 2000 - AN EXPERIMENTAL IPV6-ONLY DNS ROOT AND GTLD SERVER IS NOW AVAILABLE

Viagénie is now offering access to the first DNS root and gTLD server on IPv6. IPv6, the next generation Internet protocol, enhances the protocol currently used on the Internet. And the last missing piece to enable IPv6, a DNS root server using the IPv6 protocol, is now available. DNS root servers are key Internet servers that answer requests for resolving domain names into IP addresses. And access to Viagénie's IPv6 DNS root server is going to facilitate the deployment of IPv6.

This service is available to the IPv6 community without any restriction, but on a best effort basis. It uses the BIND9 software. This service should be considered experimental. Information on how to use it is available at http://www.viagenie.qc.ca/fr/ipv6/dnsrs/utilisation.shtml

Viagénie's new service is not only going to facilitate the deployment of IPv6 but will also enable large scale tests of DNS resolution using IPv6. This is going to help DNS root server operators to offer this service in the near future.

This IPv6 server is on the CA*net3 network. It has been based on Sun Solaris8 IPv6-ready operating system. It has used the BIND9 release from ISC. Part of this work has been funded by Canarie.

About Viagénie inc.

Actively involved in IPv6 since 1995, Viagénie is a consulting firm specialised in IPv6, network security, advanced networks, voice-video over IP and internationalisation. It has been the first Canadian site connected to the 6Bone, the IPv6 international test network. In addition, Viagénie has made available the following services to the IPv6 community. An IPv6 Quake server ported by its staff to IPv6. The 6Tap, which is the first IPv6 exchange, managed with ESnet. And the Freenet6 service, an IPv6 tunnel service which has had many thousands of users since the first time it had been on-line.

Viagénie has no intent to run a DNS root and gTLD server in the long term. This service is only available on a temporary and experimental basis until current DNS root servers have the IPv6 service available.
